Abstract

In this monograph, Paul Neiman, M.D. (Member and Director Emeritus, Division of Basic Science, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center), describes alternative organizing paradigms for developing research activity at biomedical research institutions. He then contrasts the implications of each of these choices across a spectrum of elements that comprise the operating structure of the enterprise. The philosophy and a selection of supporting policies used in developing the faculty in basic science at Fred Hutch, contrasted with a widely employed program-driven approach to both basic and applied research development in academic institutions, are used as examples that might inform decision making at such institutions.
